Welcome Home!

And we're off...  It is indeed a pleasure to be here.  I do enjoy the fascinating life of our leading man, Mr. Tyler Perry.  Like Will Smith said in a biography done on him not long ago, when you hear people addressing you as Mr. Smith instead of just plain 'ole Will, you know you have arrived.

And it is time we give this talented young man the accolades he has earned and so rightfully deserve.  I am proud of his strong committment to not just excel, but take others along with him to higher heights.  We have so much and yet sometimes we hold back sharing what the good Lord gave us with our neighbours.  And Mr. Perry has demonstrated that so aptly with his full accompaniment of 300+ staff members and the numerous persons he has assisted over his short time in the industry.

Mr. Perry we tip our hats off to you, we raise our glasses in your honor, we nod an acknowledgment of thanks, admiration and respect and we bow in full curtsey in the cutest way to honor your past, admonish your present and preserve your future.  To Mr. Tyler Perry... Hooray!  Hooray!  Hooray!

Stay in the Climb.
To chase down a dream!
July 25th 2010

Sorry I've been MIA but we just finished the movie, For Colored Girls, and I have to tell you, I have new respect for Ntozake Shange's 1975 writings. Listening to these words spoken through the voices of Phylicia Rashad, Kerry Washington, Tessa Thompson, Macy Gray, Kimberly Elise, Thandie Newton, Whoopi Goldberg, Janet Jackson and Loretta Devine, made me not only respect the brilliance of the material, but also pull out everything in me to do my best to give it the care and attention to detail that it deserved. Out of all that I've ever done in my life, nothing has taken more out of me than this film. It is remarkable.

Being so drained, I decided to take a few days off. Yesterday I was hiking a mountain in Hawaii with a friend. I was laboring up this beautiful green pastured mountain, looking down at my feet trying to be sure of my footing, while at the same time trying to catch my breath from the altitude. At times, I would make big steps, sometimes all I could do was take small ones. The terrain was uneven and rough at times. It took a lot of effort and a lot of thought so, needless to say, I was getting really tired and at times wanted to stop or just turn back.

I got to one peak and I thought "I'm here, great, we can rest now" only to realize that just because I was at the top of one peak, that didn't mean I had arrived. There were more...more valleys to go through and more heights to reach. It was interesting to me, that in order to go higher, we usually had to go down through a valley, and it went on and on and up and up. I was tired and wanted to sit down but my friend said, "Come on, let's go a little higher." So, not to be outdone by a girl (lol), I dug my hiking boots in and went a little higher. We finally got to one of the highest points and she said to me, "This is the best part, now turn around." I turned around and behind me was the most amazing view that I had seen in my 40 years on this earth. As far as my eyes could see, beauty reigned. The Hawaiian Islands seemed to be leaping up out of the silver blue sea, stretching up to catch the dust of the sky. The clouds seemed close enough to catch in my hand and make a wish; rays of sunlight danced through them trying to find a path to show off their own glow and power. Not even Picasso could have out-painted the canvas that was before me. The heavens were declaring the glory of God. I saw Him in motion.

I said to my friend, "When did we get this high?", and she said, "It was in the climb." I couldn't help but think about life - mine and maybe even yours. I thought about how hard it had been for me chasing down my dream. I thought about how hard it can be to believe sometimes. I thought about the entire struggle, all of the pain, all of the hope, all of the doubt. I thought about the times I was working a dead end job, trying to believe; moving through day-to-day with my head down just taking one step at a time, some small, some big ones, wanting to give up; wanting to stop and sit for a while; wanting to lay in my sorrow; nobody believing in me; nobody thinking it would come to pass and never realizing that every step was taking me closer to higher. That hike was painful, it hurt, but through it all I was getting higher and had no idea how high I was. That's what it's like to chase down a dream.

Sometimes in life dreams are hard to follow, like that climb. You don't know how high you're going or even if you're moving, but every step, even when you can't see what's behind you, will take you closer to your goals. It's in the climb. I know you may be struggling right now, but you're in the climb; things may be hard right now, but you're in the climb; people may not believe in you, but it's part of the climb. They may take shots at you, but stay in the climb; you may have to stand alone, but you're in the climb. Even if you're not where you want to be right now, I want to say to you what she said to me, "This is the best part, now turn around." Look how far you've come. God has not brought you this far to leave you. Stay in the climb.

So thankful for all of you. Be well. CLIMB!

He's Still Single…at 40?
By Bob Strauss

Don’t let his single status scare you. Here are 5 great things you should know about over-40 guys.

When I turned 40 a few years ago, the bane of my existence was every well-meaning article in women’s magazines explaining why guys my age were dicey propositions, relationship-wise. We’re too used to living on our own, the experts said. We have commitment issues or problems with intimacy (or both). Lost in the discussion were all the reasons an unmarried 40-year-old guy might actually be an excellent catch. Here are just a few:

We’ve learned how to take care of ourselves.

Explains Beth, 50, of Ohio: “Only after you’ve been the one totally responsible for the household and all those incidentals of life — home, appliance and car repairs; balancing your checkbook; paying your bills on time; doing the laundry and dishes; learning how to dress yourself without requiring another human being’s opinion — can you have a successful relationship.” (This doesn’t, of course, apply to 40-plus guys who still live at home with mother and sleep in the same bed they’ve been sleeping in since they were five years old.)

We’ve thrown back a lot of fishes, kissed a lot of frogs, etc.

Yes, there are some 40-year-old single guys out there who’ve never so much as held hands with a member of the opposite sex, but the rest of us have suffered through enough setups, blind dates and singles-only events to have a pretty good idea of what we’re looking for. Says Mary Jo Fay, author of When Your Perfect Partner Goes Perfectly Wrong: “If he’s been an active dater all these years and isn’t a hermit, then he has certainly experienced a variety of women. By now, a smart guy should know what he wants and what he doesn’t, and he won’t waste his time hanging out with the wrong gal.”

We’ve been busy establishing our careers.

David Sternberg, a social worker in Washington, D.C., has an interesting (and logical) take on a certain breed of 40-plus single men: “A man may spend much of his 20s in graduate school and his 30s cultivating his career, which leaves very little time to pursue romantic relationships. And now he’s ready to do so — with the advantage that he’s secure in his career and probably financially stable as well.” An added bonus: Even those of us who aren’t big earners are more likely to be satisfied with and settled into our careers at this age. (If this doesn’t sound convincing to you, flash back to that 25-year-old barista who vaguely told you he wanted to “get into venture capital someday” as he let you pick up the check.)

We may not have heard the question right.

If a guy has a legalistic frame of mind, he may answer no to the query, “Have you ever been married?” without going on to elaborate that he lived with his last girlfriend for 10 years and had a couple of kids. (On the other hand, if he doesn’t volunteer this information by the third or fourth date, you have bigger problems on your hands than his prior marital status.) Outside of certain communities, there’s no longer a stigma to living together in lieu of marriage, and some couples opt for the non-wedding route from strictly legal or financial considerations. You might want to cover your bases and ask something more specific, like: “Have you ever been in a committed relationship that lasted longer than two weeks?”

We don’t have enough energy to play the field.

If you’re not quite convinced by the above arguments, here’s something to seal the deal: It’s a scientific fact that guys in their 20s and 30s and guys in their 40s and 50s have vastly different testosterone levels. Even if he was a lothario in his youth, a 45-year-old man will be less inclined to juggle two or more relationships because the logistics required will cut severely into his TV time. At this relatively advanced age, an unmarried man has exactly enough energy for three things: working, channel surfing, and loving and caring for the woman he’s finally decided to marry.

Tyler Perry continues silence regarding ‘Boondocks’ when addressing episode
Tuesday, July 6, 2010 8:51 AM CDT

Blog Straightfromthea.com caught with Tyler Perry in New Orleans at the Essence Festival and got him respond to the recent Boondocks episode that took a stab at his professional and personal life.

Supposedly, very soon after the “Pause” epic-sode of Boondocks, Perry fired his entire staff in order to “control any leaks of information.”

Rumors also have it that the Madea creator is filing a lawsuit against Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder, but Perry denies any of that. Instead of elaborating on the topic, he said:

“Just like the Spike Lee situation, I feel that ‘no response’ is the best response. I’m just gonna leave it at that… But I will tell you this … there is absolutely no truth to the rumor that I’m suing The Boondocks. Those are all lies. I’m not suing anybody over that. And I haven’t fired anyone because of that show, either. I don’t know where all that came from.”

Information from Eurweb.com and Straightfromthea.com contributed to this report.

Tyler Perry Wants You To Know…
Written by ATLien

…that he loves StraightFromTheA.com [blushing]… and that The Boondocks “PAUSE” episode didn’t faze him one bit!

I sat down with Tyler Perry briefly during this weekend’s Essence Music Festival and he spilled the beans to me about what’s really going on with all the rumored drama about how the racy adult cartoon portrayed him.

As you can see in the video, Tyler didn’t want to address the situation on camera, but he made no qualms about how he felt about the episode and the many rumors surrounding it.

That epic episode spawned several stories about Tyler firing his entire staff in order to “control any leaks of information.” There were also stories about Tyler filing a lawsuit against the show and it’s founder Aaron McGruder.

I asked Tyler how he felt about that Boondocks episode and while he didn’t want to go into detail on the subject, Tyler specifically addressed the two stories that are running the blog world right now:

"Just like the Spike Lee situation, I feel that “no response” is the best response. I’m just gonna leave it at that…"

"But I will tell you this… there is absolutely no truth to the rumor that I’m suing The Boondocks. Those are all lies. I’m not suing anybody over that."

"And I haven’t fired anyone because of that show either. I don’t know where all that came from."

Tyler seems to have more of a sense of humor than y’all give him credit for… and Me? I’m just happy I got some TP love… especially after reading this quote from Tyler’s ‘people’ when asked about the situation:

Just don’t believe anything you read on the blogs. But we’re always happy to speak with legitimate journalists who are interested in doing actual reporting. (source)

Ok, I wanted you to be the first to know that tickets start going on sale for the Fall Tour of MADEA'S BIG HAPPY FAMILY as early as today. As you all know, I have been on tour all this year and I took this summer off to do two movies, but I am looking forward to finishing out the tour and seeing all of your faces.

Before tickets are announced to the general public, I wanted to give you a heads up so you could get good seats. You've been following my emails for so long that I wanted you to have an opportunity to be up close and personal. But not too close, Madea is really ugly up close...LOL.

This tour started in January and we have been filling theatres and arenas all over the country. I wish I had more time to go to more cities but I don't (studio stuff), so just know that if you can, you should be there to witness this play. I promise you will leave feeling better than when you came in. Get ready for a good time and bring some pain pills because you will laugh until it hurts...I assure you!

I wanted you to know first before the advertising starts to the general public. Ok, so pass it on and I'll see you in your city.

I'm in Harlem WORLD...
June 4 2010

You all know I have done all of these performances on tour - 125 shows in 126 days, so I couldn't wait to chill and get some rest. I even sent you a picture from my little bit of paradise. I'm there chillin'...me and a very special friend. We're sunbathing and swimming, I'm flying my RC planes. We even decided to go to this place where you can swim with the sharks. She decided to swim. Me, well, let's just say I figured that someone would have had to tell the story if it went badly, so I stayed on the dock...LOL.

Anyway, I'm there on vacation, celebrating life, thanking God and just relaxing when I get a message that I have to come home, that Mariah has dropped out of the film! I said "What? You're kidding? It's five days before she has to go to work, nobody does that. We have a deal. IT'S FIVE DAYS BEFORE SHE IS SUPPOSED TO GO TO WORK! So, I got on the plane and came home and started trying to re-cast this major role in the film.

I land and get to the studio, and I'm like, what happened? I was told that we got a call, saying that even though our deal was done, she had been advised by her doctor not to do the film. I said "What? You know I want a doctor's note, don't you?!"...LOL

But to tell you the truth, I don't know what that means and, unlike the tabloids, I won't speculate. All I know is that I'm waiting just like the rest of the world to find out what happened.

In spite of this, what you need to know is that I am a huge Mariah Carey fan and always will be. What I do know of the woman is that she is a professional and wouldn't back out of a deal unless it was a major issue. So, whatever is going on, I wish her and Nick the best, and she has all my love, prayers and support. I just wish I could have finished my Mai Tai before I had to get back and re-cast this role!

Anyway, I wanted to announce the official cast, baring anymore doctor surprises, : here they are: Janet Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, Loretta Devine, Anika Noni Rose, Thandie Newton, Kimberly Elise, Kerry Washington, Phylicia Rashad, Macy Gray, Tessa Thompson, Michael Ealy, Hill Harper, Khalil Kain, Omari Hardwick and Richard Lawson.

And all I can tell you is that if the last three days are any indication, we are truly on our way to something special.

Tyler Perry in hot water of copyright infringement.
5 February 2010

Apparently, megawatt film producer Tyler Perry forgot to cross a T in his business affairs. He's now facing a lawsuit after being accused of using parts of a gospel song on the sitcom "Meet the Browns" without compensating its copyright holder. Looks like it's time to pay the piper.

In a 2009 episode of "Browns," a group sang the lyrics, "The Devil thought he had me ... but I got away," but the writer wasn't asked for permission. That works in the church, which is Perry's background, because many of the songs are in the public domain, but in film and TV ... that's a no-no. Perhaps it was one of those off-script moments, that Perry typically appreciates, but there are no excuses when it comes to copyright infringement.

According to the lawsuit filed Wednesday in federal court in Los Angeles, songwriter Johnny Tyrone Stringfield claims the lyrics came from his song, "I Got Away," a song he copyrighted back in 2008.

Stringfield is asking for more than $100,000 in damages from Perry and the company behind the production. A mere drop in Perry's bucket, but it's the principle ... –gerald radford

THANK YOU!
Dec 26th , 2009

A few months ago, I said I was taking off the rest of 2009. The reason for that, although I didn't say it at the time, was so I could spend my mother's final days at her side. I am so glad I did. It made all the difference in the world to me. Thank you for all of your condolences. As you know, my mother was the apple of my eye, so this has been difficult to say the least. I'll say more about her as I am able. It's just to soon to talk publicly about it. It is still very raw. All I'll say is this, take care of your mothers…you only get one. I've got to stop talking about this, sorry.

You have no idea how much I need to go to work right now, for no other reason than to just to be busy. January 4th can't get here soon enough. If you think I've been working at a crazy pace before, you ain't seen nothing yet!…SMILE. I'm telling you, if I walk these dogs one more time, I think they're going to cuss me out!….LOL. Y'all know I can't sit still.

Anyway, I am so glad I have decided to go out on tour. You can't image how much I need to be in front of the people right now. To get that give-and-take, I am so looking forward to it. Can you believe it's been 5 years since I've toured? So I'm coming to make you hurt yourself in a good way…LOL. MADEA's BIG HAPPY FAMILY is my new play. Trust me when I tell you, I need to laugh and make you laugh even harder. All I want to say is that if you have not seen "MADEA" live on stage you haven't seen Madea at all. In the movies, I'm limited but on stage….FREEEEDDOMMMM!!! LOL.

This is truly my BIGGEST and BEST PLAY EVER! I've done some things in this show that have never been seen in a play before. The show is hilarious! I mean, it's so funny that we can't get through rehearsals. We're trying to get it all out now. And the music! The music is off the chain. So come on out, I'd love to see you there. It's bigger and better than anything I've ever done. I'm excited about it, I really am. Can you tell?

Here are the tour dates for the first leg.

Jan 4th, 2010…El Paso, TX….Don Haskins Center
Jan 5th, 2010….Phoenix, AZ….Dodge Theatre
Jan 6th, 2010….San Diego, CA….San Diego Sports Arena
Jan 9th, 2010….Seattle, WA….Key Arena
Jan 10th, 2010….Portland, OR….Memorial Coliseum

Click HERE to view all scheduled dates. Oh yeah, if you don't see your city, just remember this is only the first leg…more cities will be added.

God Bless and thank you again.

I almost forgot. On Christmas Eve, I misdialed a number and started talking to a lady who I didn't know. Her name is Irene Toliver. She didn't believe it was me so here's your proof …SMILE. You and your husband seem like very nice people. I hope you got your cooking finished in time. Didn't mean to take up your time, but you reminded me of my mother. God bless you.

I wanted to tell you this before the tickets went on sale in most places....Madea is officially going on tour! That's right, a Madea play, live on tour! I have managed to carve out about a year to go on the road and see you all again.

I gotta tell you, I have missed you. There is nothing like a live performance and if you've never seen a Madea play, then you haven't seen Madea at all. It is an experience, just ask someone who's seen it ...SMILE

It's been 5 years since I've been on the road and the timing just happened to fall right into place. I needed to get away from Hollywood for a second...clear my head. There is no better way to do that than to come out and see your faces and be reminded of where this all started.

The show is called MADEA'S BIG HAPPY FAMILY. I'm going to come through as many cities as I can. I know I can't get to all of them but I'll try and get as close as I can. Get your tickets early! Tyler Perry Sued Over Praising Jesus
Posted Nov 26th 2009 8:43AM by TMZ Staff

Tyler Perry used too much of the goodness of Jesus in his movie, "Madea Goes to Jail," at least according to a new federal lawsuit obtained by TMZ.

The suit, filed by the personal representative of deceased gospel singer/songwriter Bertha James, claims Perry lifted an entire verse from a song James wrote in 1950 -- "When I Think of the Goodness of Jesus."

The suit claims Perry pilfered the verse and used it in "Madea" -- specifically, "incorporating the entire Chorus in a monologue delivered by the main character in 'Madea" referencing her deliverance from a jail sentence and leniency for repetitive criminal conduct, in a staged court proceeding presided over by 'Judge Mabeline.'"

Bertha's estate, which is also suing Lionsgate Entertainment, wants unspecified damages for copyright infringement.
