"OVERHEARD" Part 1 |

Tyler Perry and gospel recording artist Briana met in 2000 when they were introduced by mutual friends David and Tamela Mann. Over the past nine years that Tyler and Briana have known each other, they've become best friends (almost inseparable), prayer warriors for each other, told each other that they were in love with one another, became more than friends, tried a relationship, ended the relationship, became lovers shortly after Tyler asked Briana if she would carry his child. Briana agreed, and their intimacy was taken to the next level. Unfortunately, Briana loved Tyler more than Tyler loved her, and wanted more from him than just a baby, but Tyler was too focused on his successful career, and he told Briana that he didn't want to be in a relationship with her. Briana wanted marriage, and Tyler told her that he wasn't ready to slow down and couldn't give her what she wanted. Tyler and Briana's relations have since stopped, and their friendship has been strained for the past couple of years. Tyler has gone on to date and start relationships with other women, leaving Briana very confused and heartbroken...
David and Tamela Mann were talking to each other alone in an office room at TPS Studios before a meeting with CEO Tyler Perry. Tamela was trying to get David to remember something that happened a while back when she said:
TAMELA: "Remember around the time, some years ago, when Briana lost the baby and she stayed with us that one night...?"
DAVID: "Oh, yeah, yeah. okay..." (Tyler walks by the room and overhears their conversation. He stops to listen in, but by that time Tamela had changed the subject. Tyler wasn't quite sure he heard correctly, but he was curious when he heard Briana's name and "baby" in the same conversation. Tyler enters the room along with other MTB's cast members to get the meeting started. When the meeting is over, Tyler asks to speak with David and Tamela alone.)
TYLER: "The meeting's over, I just wanted to ask ya'll something."
DAVID: "Yeah?"
TYLER: "I overheard ya'll talking, and I apologize for eavesdropping, but I heard you say that Briana lost a baby...?" (David and Tamela get visibly stiff) "Now, were ya'll talking about the Briana we all know, or am I just in ya'll business?"(David and Tamela are silent for a while looking at each other, avoiding Tyler's questioning eyes) "Tam...? Were you?"
TAMELA: (slowly and shaky says) "Yes, but ---"
TYLER: "What...?" (as if he didn't hear correctly)
TAMELA: "Tyler, it was a while ago, and I wasn't supposed to say anything."
TYLER: "Briana was pregnant...?
TAMELA: "Yes, but Tyler, I can't talk about it."
TYLER: "What do you mean you can't talk about it? How long ago was this?
DAVID:(slowly says) "Tyler, listen ---"
TAMELA: "She didn't want me to say anything." (becoming visably upset with tears in her eyes)
DAVID: "Look, Tyler...is that all with the meeting because we're gonna go 'head and go." (standing up with hand on Tamela's back, escorting her to the door)
TYLER: "Wait, Tam --- just tell me, because obviously I didn't know --- when was she even pregnant? (David and Tamela stop at the door and turn around)
TAMELA: "About three years ago, but Tyler, I really can't say anymore because I've already said too much." (hurries out of the room very upset)
TYLER: "David, why is she so upset? (when Tamela left out of the room, David stays behind to talk to Tyler)
DAVID: "Tyler, I can't say too much either, but now that you know ---"
TYLER: "Wait, wait, wait. Why do ya'll keep sayin' ya'll can't say much about it? I get because Briana told ya'll not to, but my question is why?" (takes a long pause and looks at David) "Why didn't she even tell me she was pregnant let alone had a miscarriage?"
DAVID: "Tyler ---" (Tyler turned in his chair getting visably upset trying to answer his own questions. He thought he and Briana were close, so he couldn't understand why she would keep something like this from him...they told each other everything. He wondered who she could have been pregnant by, than he got angry as he thought back on their relationship...)
TYLER: "Did she tell you not to say anything because it was mine?" (David takes a long pause...)
DAVID: (slowly says) "Tyler, my suggestion to you is that you call Briana and talk to her. I'm gonna 'head out." (turns and walks out of the room leaving tyler alone with his thoughts...)
MEANWHILE...
Tamela called Briana on her cell phone when she got outside of the building to let her know what just happened.
BRIANA: "Hello?"
TAMELA: (takes a deep breath) "Briana...?"
BRIANA: "Hey, gurl! What's goin' on?" (long pause)
BRIANA: "Tammy...? Hello...?"
TAMELA: (let's out a warry sigh) "Briana, I have to tell you something."
BRIANA: "What? Is everything okay?"
TAMELA: "Are you busy? I'm sorry. I ain't even ask if you were ---"
BRIANA: "No, no, gurl. What's up?"
TAMELA: (sighs again) "Tyler overheard me talking to David...I was trying to get David to remember something and I used the time you stayed with us that one time, one night, for him to remember."
BRIANA: "Tammy, what are you talking about?"
TAMELA: "Tyler heard me say 'when you lost the baby'..." (long pause)
TAMELA: "Briana...?"
BRIANA: (shocked says)"Oh, my God."
TAMELA: "Briana, I'm so sorry. I didn't know he was listening or that he heard me."
BRIANA: "Oh, my God." (in disbelief)
TAMELA: " I'm so sorry, but I think he knows."
BRIANA: " Knows what exactly? Did you tell him anything?"
TAMELA: "No, no. He started asking questions after our meeting and I told him I couldn't say anything."
BRIANA: (remorseful says) "Oh, my God."
TAMELA: "Briana, I am so sorry"
BRIANA: " No, no. It's okay, I guess, right...? I mean all he heard was that I lost a baby, right...? I mean he doesn't know anything else, right...? (brief pause)
TAMELA: " I told him it happened a long time ago..."
BRIANA: "Well, what kind of questions was he asking?
TAMELA: "He just really wanted to know why I couldn't say anything, but I walked out to call you before it got too big to let you know what happened."
BRIANA: "What do you mean before it 'got too big'?"
TAMELA: "Well, David is still in there talking to him, and ---"
BRIANA: "Oh, my God."
TAMELA: "But I think he's in there tellin' him the same thing I said...that we couldn't say anything. Briana, I'm sorry."
BRIANA: "It's okay, Tammy."
TAMELA: "No, I feel so bad..."
BRIANA: "Don't --- hold on a second..." (pauses) Oh, my God, girl...Tyler's calling me..."
